Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, reportedly spent his time in detention fasting, studying the Quran, and reading several books, according to one of his close associates.
Bashir Garba Sufyan shared insights into El-Rufai’s activities during his custody on his 𝕏 account shortly after the former governor regained his freedom.
According to Sufyan, El-Rufai focused on spiritual growth and intellectual pursuits while in detention. He wrote:
“Alhamdulillah, Mallam is home with his family, friends, and associates. The first thing he told us was that, since his detention, he had been fasting until yesterday.
He also completed the Holy Qur’an, read 10 books, and has even written some himself. And you wonder why he’s great and undefeated.”
El-Rufai was detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on February 19, 2026, after questioning at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for about 48 hours.
He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on a 10-count charge related to alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. The former governor pleaded not guilty, and the hearing of his bail application was adjourned to March 31.
El-Rufai was released shortly after news broke of the passing of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Cairo, Egypt, following an illness.
His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed his father’s release, and several prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, sent condolences over the death of his mother.
Despite his release, El-Rufai has denied all allegations against him, and the details surrounding his release remain largely undisclosed.
