Dangote Refinery IPO Attracts Strong Investor Interest as ₦2.15 Trillion Offer Opens

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Initial Public Offering (IPO) has attracted strong interest from Nigerian retail investors following the opening of the ₦2.15 trillion public offer.

The IPO, which opened on September 14, 2026, offers 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares, valued at ₦5,250.

The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026, subject to the terms of the offer.

Investors Rush to Participate

The Dangote Refinery IPO has generated significant interest among retail investors, with digital investment platforms experiencing unusually high traffic following the launch.

Reuters reported that several Nigerian fintech investment platforms experienced outages as demand surged, highlighting the level of public interest in the offering. Bamboo, for example, reportedly recorded a sharp increase in traffic shortly after the IPO opened.

The offering has been promoted as an opportunity for ordinary Nigerians to become shareholders in one of the country’s largest industrial projects.

The minimum investment of ₦5,250 for 10 shares has also lowered the entry point for retail investors who want to participate in the offer.

What the ₦2.15 Trillion IPO Means

If fully subscribed, the public offer is expected to raise approximately ₦2.15 trillion, equivalent to about $1.6 billion.

The IPO comprises 4.1 billion shares priced at ₦525 each and represents one of the largest public offerings in Africa. It is also the first time a petroleum refinery has been offered to investors on the Nigerian Exchange in the Exchange’s 66-year history.

The funds are expected to support the refinery’s expansion plans, including a proposed increase in refining capacity from its current 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

Dangote Refinery’s Strong Financial Performance

The IPO comes as the refinery reports a significant improvement in its financial performance.

According to Reuters, Dangote Refinery recorded $1.82 billion in net profit during the first half of 2026, compared with a $476 million loss during the same period in 2025.

The refinery generated more than $13 billion in revenue during the period, supported partly by strong demand for refined petroleum products in international markets.

The financial performance has added to the attention surrounding the public offering as investors assess the company’s prospects and the risks associated with owning shares in the business.

IPO Open to Retail and Institutional Investors

The Nigerian Exchange Group confirmed that the offer is open to retail, institutional and eligible African investors.

The IPO officially opened at an opening-gong ceremony at the NGX trading floor in Lagos, where Aliko Dangote formally commenced the public offer.

The Dangote Refinery is located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and currently has a refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.

The facility is undergoing expansion that is expected to eventually double its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.

Growing Interest Brings Scam Warnings

With the high level of public interest, regulators have also warned prospective investors to be careful when subscribing.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advised investors to obtain information only through official channels and to ensure that payments and applications are made through approved receiving agents and subscription platforms.

Investors have also been warned against transferring money to individuals or organisations claiming to process Dangote Refinery IPO applications outside the approved channels.

The official Dangote IPO website also warns that it will never request a PIN, password or OTP from investors.

How Much Is the Minimum Investment?

The minimum subscription is 10 shares at ₦525 each, meaning an investor can apply with ₦5,250.

However, investors should understand that buying shares does not guarantee a profit. Share prices can rise or fall after listing, and dividends are not guaranteed.

The official IPO information states that investors should read the prospectus, including the risk factors, before making an investment decision.

What Happens After the IPO?

Once the offer closes, applications will be processed and shares will be allotted according to the terms of the offer.

The official IPO information currently lists the offer closing date as October 13, 2026, while the dates for allotment and listing are yet to be confirmed.

The public offer therefore represents an important development for Nigeria’s capital market, particularly because it is bringing a major industrial company to a much wider pool of retail investors.

Final Thoughts

The Dangote Refinery IPO has quickly become one of the major developments in Nigeria’s business and investment space.

With 4.1 billion shares offered at ₦525 each, the transaction could raise approximately ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed.

Strong retail interest, coupled with the refinery’s recent financial performance and expansion plans, has placed the IPO firmly in the spotlight.

However, prospective investors should carefully review the official offer documents, understand the risks involved and use only SEC-approved subscription channels.
