Naira to Dollar Exchange Rate Falls to N1,355$ Amid FX Pressure

Nigeria’s foreign exchange (FX) market recorded stronger trading activity in the week ended June 19, 2026, with total turnover rising 7.7% to $2.323 billion, according to data from FMDQ Securities Exchange.

The growth was driven mainly by increased activity in the FX Spot market, which accounted for 98.4% of all transactions. Spot turnover climbed to $2.286 billion, while FX Forward contracts surged by an impressive 129.8% to $36.14 million.

The sharp increase in FX Forward transactions suggests that businesses and financial institutions are increasingly hedging against possible naira volatility by locking in future exchange rates.

Interestingly, the stronger FX market performance came during a difficult week for the Nigerian stock market, with the NGX All-Share Index falling 3.59%. This indicates that currency trading was largely driven by corporate demand, import financing, and risk management rather than stock market sentiment.

Key Highlights

  • Total FX turnover rose 7.7% to $2.323 billion.
  • FX Spot transactions made up 98.4% of total market activity.
  • FX Forward trading jumped 129.8% to $36.14 million.
  • No exchange-traded FX Futures were recorded for the second straight week.
  • Increased demand for FX Forwards signals growing efforts to hedge against naira fluctuations.

Nigeria has operated a unified, market-driven exchange rate system since the Central Bank’s June 2023 reforms, making FX market activity a key indicator for inflation, import costs, and business confidence.
