Canada imposes new sanctions on Iranian businessmen involved in tech procurement for war effort

Canada has stepped up its measures against Iran, imposing fresh sanctions on five individuals and four companies linked to Iranโ€™s military and drone programs.

The move is part of Canadaโ€™s ongoing efforts to counter destabilizing actions by the Iranian regime, according to a statement from Global Affairs Canada issued on Thursday.

โš ๏ธ Targeted Individuals and Companies

The sanctions focus on businessmen and companies directly involved in procuring technology to support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Global Affairs Canada said:

โ€œThe transfer by the Islamic Republic of Iran of arms, drones, and technology to Iranโ€™s proxy networks and to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine is fueling international armed conflict.โ€

The individuals recently sanctioned include:

  • Ehsan Imaninejad โ€“ CEO of Saad Sazah Faraz Sharif
  • Hadi Zahourian โ€“ CEO of Chekad Sanat Faraz Asia
  • Mohammad Shahab Khanian โ€“ Deputy CEO of Chekad Sanat Faraz Asia
  • Ehsan Rahat Varnosfadrani โ€“ Chief Scientist and former CEO of Chekad Sanat Faraz Asia
  • Rahmatollah Heidari โ€“ Managing Director of Baharestan Kish Company

The entities under sanctions include:

  • Chekad Sanat Faraz Asia โ€“ develops components for Iranโ€™s Shahed series drones
  • Saad Sazah Faraz Sharif โ€“ also involved in Shahed drone production
  • Kimia Part Sivan (KIPAS) โ€“ drone production arm of the IRGC-Quds Force
  • Sarmad Electronic Sepahan โ€“ develops electronic and electromechanical components for drones and avionics

๐Ÿ“Œ What the Sanctions Mean

Global Affairs explained that the sanctions:

  • Freeze any assets the listed individuals or companies hold in Canada
  • Prohibit anyone in Canada or abroad from providing property to them
  • Ban the sanctioned individuals from entering Canada

With this latest action, Canada has now sanctioned a total of 487 Iranian individuals and entities under the Special Economic Measures Act and the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act.

๐ŸŒ Context and Global Impact

Over the past two years, Canada has:

  • Listed the IRGC as a terrorist organization under Canadian law
  • Designated Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism
  • Declared several senior Iranian officials inadmissible to Canada

Global Affairs noted that the current conflict involving Iran has escalated tensions across the Middle East, contributing to economic instability and disruptions in global trade, shipping, and energy markets.

Canada has reached out for comment from Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, but no response had been received at the time of reporting.

๐Ÿ“ Wheytindeyblog Take

Canadaโ€™s latest sanctions show that the global community continues to hold Iran accountable for its military and technological activities, especially as they relate to regional conflicts and international security.

This step not only restricts Iranian access to global markets but also signals Canadaโ€™s firm stance against the use of technology for war and destabilization.
