The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to urgently intervene and ensure the safety of Nigerian students living in South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS Vice President for External Affairs, Aneke Kenechukwu, raised concerns over increasing hostility targeting foreign nationals, especially Nigerians and other Africans.
Rising Fear Among Nigerian Students
According to NANS, Nigerian students in South Africa are currently living in fear due to repeated incidents of harassment and violence.
“Nigerian students in South Africa now live in fear and uncertainty,” the statement said.
The association described the situation as a national emergency, stressing that students abroad represent Nigeria as young ambassadors.

Call for Urgent Government Action
NANS called on the Federal Government to take immediate diplomatic steps by engaging South African authorities to guarantee the safety of Nigerians, particularly students.
It also urged authorities to activate diplomatic channels to monitor the situation and ensure justice for victims of xenophobic violence.
Demand for Emergency Support
Beyond diplomacy, NANS also requested immediate support for affected students, including:
- Safe shelters
- Emergency hotlines
- Financial assistance
- Possible evacuation plans for willing students
The group warned that delays in action could put more lives at risk.
